The road from Sofia soon enters a landscape of tree covered hillsides and lakes. It passes by the huge lake Iskar, a freshwater inland sea that provides a wide range of summer activities. After about 50 km, the road reaches a plateau and you are confronted by the magnificent sight of the snow covered Rila Mountains, the highest peaks in Bulgaria. The town of Samokov lies at their base, through which runs the Beli Iskar river. The road follows this stony river and soon arrives in Beli Iskar village, over the hill is Borovets.
The centre of Beli Iskar is just off the main road. Cafés and some small shops are available, but once the Super Borovets project is complete, facilities will be greatly expanded. Plans include sports and entertainment centres, ski lifts and numerous ski runs connecting the village to Borovets. Sofia is 70km away, with Borovets and Samokov both 7km away. Air TravelSofia is the nearest airport, being only 70km away from Beli Iskar. Many Airlines now travel from the UK to Sofia. Even the budget airlines line EasyJet have moved in. Internet booking search engines are a good place to start when looking for airfares. Try Opodo or Last Minute.com and don't forget companies like First Choice, Crystal and Balkan Holidays as they offer charter flights to Sofia |
